"Yesterday, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced that the two countries have formed the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center and will both provide a total of $100 million dollars in funding to research to get both energy hungry countries on the path to a greener future."
Just what we need - another government research center.

TheSicilian: the US already handed the keys to China - when we sent all manufacturing to them and started to buy things at Wally-World.

This is hard to believe with China buying up every bit of Crude Oil and Coal that they can find, even whole Companies.

A number of commenters berate any effort that would help clean up the use of coal. The facts are that the use of coal in the amounts used now & probably greater will be with us for as long as anyone can guess. Any thing that can be done to mitigate the harmful effects of coal use makes a great deal of sense. If sharing advances in technology that make using coal cleaner in terms of emissions helps the Chinese make their use of coal cleaner and reduce the amount of emissions drift across the Pacific into the US & Canada, then we absolutely need to do it.
We will not live long enough, nor will our children & grand children, to see the day that the use of coal is replaced to any appreciable degree by solar, wind, geothermal or water generated electricity due to relationship of the cost of coal use versus cost of cleaner alternatives.

The US will do all the work in this partnership and the Chinese will standby and reap all the benefits. That's the way the Chinese operate.

China primarily powers itself with coal. The do use oil for motive power and do generate some electricity via nuclear. But OK, what's the point? Are they going to try to coax China in to "clean coal" technology? Hey, if it's good enough for them, it ought to be good enough for us.

I wonder if this situation is even worth dealing with. What do they hope to accomplish?

Don't trust China? I can understand the feeling - but China won't be communist forever. They are economically capitalist, and eventually the communist system will die the death of a thousand cuts. I am leery of the Chinese government - but not the Chinese people. They are smart, and besides, it is much better to work with them than against them.

China has already left US in the dust in the alternate energy race. Why do we need to partner up with them. They have all the $ & jobs in the world, let them foot the bill for once. It's not like anyone here in the US is going to benefit from it anyway, except of course wall st & washington. That is the only time the give out $ is when it's going to benefit them. I think the end result will be China will end up with the technology & the US will end up with the bill.

China historically has not been a good partner. They instead co-opt or steal outright, technology and trade secrets from their Western "partners". China is not to be trusted.

From prior history, China has not been open to independent verification of any accords. I remain skeptical on this agreement, also.
