Fracking Rules on U.S. Lands Seen by Interior as Model

bloomberg.com -- Federal rules for fracking on public lands, set to be released in a few weeks, may serve as a model for states to get companies to disclose the chemicals used in the drilling process, an Obama administration official said.

The proposed federal standards will be compatible with rules already in place in states such as Wyoming and Texas, and will allow limited exemptions for “legitimate trade secrets,” David Hayes, the deputy Interior secretary, said today.

“What we expect is that the momentum that you already see in states for disclosure will be reinforced by what we do,” Hayes said in an interview at the Washington office of Bloomberg News. “Most folks would like to see an across-the-board approach to deal with these issues.”

In addition to chemical disclosures, the rules will set

Questionable form from the OP? "One has to wonder if one of our more spastic GB members has either been exposed to too many of these fracking chemicals already; or simply needs his medication increased? Perhaps someone needs to call a Doctor?"

Are personal attacks like that helpful to the discussion? I know there are worse examples but that was the latest. When someone has to resort to name calling, chances are they are out of logic.

It's pretty simple, as I posted the other day with a copy pasted below. If they have not fully disclosed what they are injecting, it's easy. Disclose it. Does anyone think the public would object to full disclosure? OTH, if this is another of far too many cases of the government just setting up another hoop to string the frackers out and run up their costs that is so typical of this Obomination of an administration, then the government's sillyness needs to be exposed.

Post from the other day:

How can the government waste more money on something so simple? Making companies disclose what they are putting into the ground is such a no brainer. Though I support drilling, because of the chance that chemicals inserted on one property can leak onto another, requiring disclosure of exactly what is being injected into these wells has to be a prerequisite to doing it. The remarkable thing is that there might be states that allow the practice without the disclosure.

At the same time, it shouldn't take forever for the government to set the requirements. If having to disclose causes a company to wonder if that might mean they'll get caught when their chemical kills people, that seems like a good thing. But if they've done their homework, they should be allowed to move forward.

BIG OIL & GAS love us

There is still a bit of a tug-of-war going on with the industry over not releasing ALL of the information on the fracking chemicals used. They claim they have to protect their "trade secrets" comparing their "trade secrets" to recipes for popular marketed foods?

Problem is, there are a lot of food safety regulations in place by the FDA to prevent companies from putting toxins such as arsenic and mercury into foods. Remember when they made them take the cocaine out of the Coke recipe? But frackers insist it is OK for them to pump toxins into our soil and air.

So trying to pretend that these frackers operate under similar restrictions by comparing them to food manufacturers? That is simply more bait and switch nonsense.

We are simply asking for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth ;0}

Wrong again and caught in ANOTHER lie NHLiver, every chemical used is, by Federal law, marked and identified with MSDS information.

See, it is easy for me to back up the truth, not so with you when all you have is innuendo and have been so easily misled by the left wing media.

You left out the "propretary" indgredients that most drillers have refused to divulge!!! Just a 'minor' detail, eh doc..

Hope they don't allow the industry to put water supplies at risk as they have by poisoning the wells of several families in Wyoming!

Standards and rules are necessary leemun. If some in this industry can't follow standards, they are in the wrong business.

Sure Nigelb!

Here's a list of the most common chemicals used, from the Dept of Energy, and common uses outside of fracing:

Fracking fluid is 90% water, 9.5% sand and the other 0.5% contains one or more of the following:

Hydrochloric Acid- commonly used to maintain swimming pools
Sodium Chloride- table salt
Polyacrymalide- commonly used as water treatment and soil conditioner
Ethylene glycol- commonly used in anti-freeze, driving agents and everyday household cleaners
Borate salts- commonly used in laundry soap, cosmetics, hand soap
Sodium/potassium carbonate- commonly used in washing soda, detergent, soap, water softener, glass and ceramics
Glutaraldehyde- commonly used in sterilizing medical and dental equipment.
Guar gum- commonly used in toothpaste, ice cream, sauces
Citric acid- found in citrus fruits
Isopropanol- commonly used in glass cleaner, antiperspirant, hair coloring.

drpepperTX said "There never has been a secret of chemicals used, only the ratio of chemicals diluted in the water are "trade secrets"."

Oh, please educate us and tell us what chemicals are used, even if you can't disclose the ratios.

Another exercise in redundancy by the government. MSDS information already has to be on every chemical, at every well site, in every state, period. There never has been a secret of chemicals used, only the ratio of chemicals diluted in the water are "trade secrets".

No differnet than Coca-Cola, which must list their ingredients. It is only the ratios of those ingredients that is protected under "trade secrets".

So only NOW is it important to change and frack on the chemical. Way to go on the delay since these companies have been doing this for decades already.

Frick and Frack-
I think the disclosure of the chemical cocktail is important as it 'should' encourage fracking companies to look for less toxic chemicals.
They may not choose to do so, but at some point someone is going to have to 'grow a set' and stand up for 'corporate responsibility'

no disclosue = no lisence to frack.
