Flying car will stretch its wings at NY International Auto Show

Los Angeles Times -- A flying car in New York City? Sounds like a good kids book premise to us, but this isn't fiction.

Terrafugia's Transition -- the world's first kinda practical flying car -- is coming to the New York International Auto Show April 6-15 at the Jacob Javitz Center.

Before you imagine Dumbo-like displays of aerial awesomeness (if only!), be forewarned that the Transition is not scheduled to do any flying at the show -- the Jacob Javitz Center may be big, but it's not that big.

There will, however, be video of the vehicle flying, as well as wing-folding demonstrations.

The Transition is set to hit the market at the end of 2012 and is scheduled to swoop in at a $279,000 price point, said Steve Moscaritolo, a spokesperson for Terrafugia.

So would you need a pilot's license or a driver's license to operate this?

And you thought tangling with a transport on your morning comute was bad.

Wait till you tangle with a Jumbo Jet.

BTW Since this is an aircraft and I have a pilots licence do I need to follow the posted speed limit on the roads.

Problems:

- Initial cost puts this vehicle out of reach for most consumers.
- Needs a runway for takeoffs and landings--illegal to do this on public roads.
- Even a minor "fender-bender" will ground this thing and cost a lot to fix.
- Annual maintenance requirements are expensive.

Having said this, there will be those who are interested in the novelty of a "flying car" and will shrug off the cost of ownership.

This is something that most of us have thought about all of our lives. I'm curious to see the stats and more information. Nothing like a roadway in the skys... Wait, I think we already have that.

Can it land/takeoff in your driveway? Or does your driveway have to be a half mile long?

And a human will never go faster than 25 MPH,

err I mean 50 MPH,

Whoops 250MPH,

Well, I really mean a person will never stand on the moon!

??????????????????

Oops, that all happened before 1970.

I wonder what will happen in 2020?!
